Join us in our fight against the HIV STIGMA

Three decades from when the world became aware of the first AIDS cases, the stigma attached to the syndrome still flourishes despite the tremendous inroads made through scaled-up prevention and treatment interventions. Kenya has the third largest HIV epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa with an estimated 1.6 million people living with HIV (PLHIV) and over 650,000 of them are currently accessing antiretroviral treatment. This situation is compounded by the fact that close to 101,560 new HIV infections occur annually according to Kenya national HIV/AIDS Stigma and discrimination index of 2018. As the countrygrapples with how to reduce the number of new infections, stigma and discrimination continue to makes young people less likely to adopt preventive strategies such as using condoms, seeking testing for HIV and other STIs, adhering to treatment, or disclosing their HIV status to sexual partners. A way to change this narrative would be to conduct community awareness on stigma associated with HIV services among young
people.
Based on our achievements and success with the previous program, we will replicate this program in other areas/locations and schools in Homabay county which we were never able to reach due to limited resource. With this additional funding, we will work with the already trained peer educator and young people living with HIV in our previous program. Through the program we aim to engage teachers, religious leaders, healthcare providers, young people in school and out of school, community leaders and community health volunteers. We are going to build awareness about and action against stigma by helping participants move to action and encouraging them to put their new learning into action, to start challenging stigma in their own lives and our community.
