Our beautiful, sweet girl Jewel sustained an eye injury on October 22, 2024. Our veterinarian from Southern Equine Services, Dr. Ashley Potter, came to examine her right away. It was determined that Jewel had an ulcer resulting from her injury that needed around-the-clock treatment. Jewel needed a recheck of her eye about 7 days later, and it was found she wasn't progressing as she should. The ulcer on her eye was not getting better. We took Jewel to Southern Equine Services to be hospitalized for further workup and treatment for her eye. While at the hospital, a port was placed so that she could receive her medications through the port rather than have someone try to manipulate her eye manually each time her meds were due. Jewel came home for three days and then back to the hospital when her port clogged, and a new one had to be re-inserted. On November 5th, 20204, Jewel was seen by a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. We had some good and some not-so-good news. Jewel's injured eye is getting better. There was a flap in the ulcer that has reattached itself, and there has been growth of epithelial cells over the ulcer, indicating that it is getting better. She is going to stay in the hospital for a few more days to ensure things continue to progress. We need to stay on top of this as the ophthalmologist found that in Jewel's opposite eye, she has a displaced retina and that it is starting to form a cataract. Jewel will need follow up on this eye becasue it could lead to blindness. Her care is ongoing, and total expenses may be as high as $6,000.
