Jaibazul is living proof that the power of one can turn into the power of many.
What began as a once-deforested field in Colombia has been transformed, tree by tree, into a thriving rainforest sanctuary now home to more than 20 endangered plant and animal species, including the critically endangered cotton-top tamarin. Through years of dedication, Jorge, the reserve’s founder, restored an entire ecosystem that had been pushed to the brink of collapse.
This extraordinary story is the subject of the 54-minute documentary The Power of One, directed and produced by Alex Valdez and Pablo De la Fuente. The film has screened at five film festivals, winning four awards, and received finishing support through Warner Bros via the Latino Film Institute. It is currently being screened at universities and institutions as part of an eco-action tour that pairs film presentations with faculty panels and hands-on conservation activities.
Beyond storytelling, the impact has already begun. Through The Power of One and the work of The Little Hummingbird Institute, Jaibazul has been connected with investment and partnerships from respected local and international nonprofit and scientific organizations, including the Humboldt Institute, SELVA, and Proyecto Tití. These collaborations strengthen the reserve’s scientific foundation and expand its conservation reach.
But the story does not end here. Jaibazul now faces a critical moment. Deforestation continues just beyond its borders, and expansion is essential to ensure the long-term protection of the ecosystem. With your support, The Little Hummingbird Institute aims to:
Acquire and protect surrounding land at risk of deforestation
Restore additional forest habitat through reforestation efforts
Develop a sustainable research and conservation center
Support ongoing ecological monitoring and biodiversity protection
Strengthen partnerships with local communities and scientific institutions
Your donation will directly contribute to the expansion and long-term sustainability of Jaibazul.
In addition, contributions support the operational capacity of The Little Hummingbird Institute, allowing us to responsibly manage conservation efforts, educational outreach, and the development of future environmental restoration initiatives inspired by this work.
Jaibazul demonstrates that one individual’s resolve can restore an endangered ecosystem. With collective support, that impact can grow far beyond a single sanctuary.
Together, we can protect what has been rebuilt, and expand what is possible.
