An estimated 61 million people in the United States live with a mental or physical condition, and about 10% of them have an invisible illness, a condition that usually does not exhibit visible signs or symptoms. Those with invisible illnesses often face medical gaslighting, delayed diagnoses, social isolation, ableism, and financial barriers to care. Many also carry the emotional weight of stigma, misunderstanding, grief, and feeling like a burden.
At Invisible Illness Awareness Network, we’re working to change that. Our goal is not only to raise awareness but to educate current and future healthcare professionals about invisible illnesses, chronic illnesses, and Disabilities so they can recognize, diagnose, and support patients more effectively. We believe that awareness and empathy in healthcare start with education, open conversations, and listening to lived experiences. Through our Invisibly Aware Series, we also aim not only to have patients, caregivers, and medical providers talk about their experiences but to create a safe environment for others to listen and join in on the conversation. For those who suspect they have an invisible illness or those who are newly diagnosed, hearing others share their experiences can be an essential part of self-acceptance, while also learning about the diagnosis itself and potential testing options, complications, and treatments.
We make all of our programs and resources free so that no one has to navigate their journey alone, but to keep doing that, we need your help. Your GivingTuesday donation directly supports student affiliates at universities, funds accessible educational programming, and keeps the Invisibly Aware Series available to everyone.
Thanks to an incredible anonymous donor, the first $500 donated today will be doubled! This is your chance to have twice the impact for those living with invisible illnesses, chronic conditions, and Disabilities.
When you give to IIAN, you’re doing more than funding programs; you’re helping build a more inclusive and compassionate future in healthcare and helping patients be seen, believed, and diagnosed sooner. You’re amplifying voices that too often go unheard.
Join us this GivingTuesday to make invisible illnesses visible.
