Greek islands are places to live, grow up and raise a family — not just places to visit. Every child deserves access to the support they need, wherever they call home.
When we think of Greek islands, we often picture summer holidays, beautiful beaches and peaceful villages. But beyond the tourist season, these islands are home to families who live, work and raise their children there all year round. And for these families, accessing essential services can be far more complicated than it might seem.
On smaller islands such as Spetses, access to specialised healthcare and therapy services can be limited. For parents of neurodivergent children, or children with developmental, communication, learning or motor difficulties, finding the right support may mean travelling to the mainland by ferry, arranging transport and accommodation, missing work or school, and managing the additional costs. When children need regular support, these journeys can become a significant practical, financial and emotional burden — making continuity of care harder to maintain.
This is why Nissimou exists.
Founded in November 2024 by Hannah Beraud-Hindi, Nissimou is a nonprofit therapy centre on Spetses, created to bring specialised support closer to the families who need it. Inspired by Hannah’s own experience of navigating the challenges of finding appropriate support for her daughter, Nissimou grew from a simple but powerful conviction: families should not have to leave their community to access the help their children need.
Today, Nissimou supports children aged 2–12 with a range of developmental, communication, motor, learning and emotional needs, whether or not they have a formal diagnosis. By bringing specialised professionals to the island, Nissimou helps children access support in a familiar environment and gives families the opportunity to build greater continuity of care, closer to home.
Beyond therapy, Nissimou works to foster a more inclusive community — one where different ways of communicating, learning and experiencing the world are understood and valued, and where children and families feel they belong.

Running a specialised therapy centre on a small island comes with additional costs. Nissimou must cover professional time, travel and accommodation for visiting specialists, therapy materials and the everyday costs of keeping the centre running.
This GivingTuesday, our goal is to raise €15,000 to help sustain access to therapy and specialised support for children and families on Spetses.
