🌟 Let’s Change It Together! 🌟
Six years ago, by pure accident, I landed in Costa Rica. That’s where I met Zoe—my beautiful baby, my heart. She wasn’t mine yet, I had to wait for permission to adopt her. But before that could happen, she disappeared. I searched everywhere, devastated. Hours later, my best friend Ileana called: Zoe had come back. The next day, she became mine.
I was terrified—I had never cared for an animal before. Until then, I had lived out of a backpack, drifting freely around the world. But Zoe changed everything. She gave me a reason to stay, to root myself, to grow.
While waiting for Zoe, I fostered my very first cat, simply called Cat. And that’s how Los Gatitos de Marlies was born. From one cat came another, then a mama with four kittens, and suddenly my tiny studio was full of furry souls in need. What started as an accident became my life’s mission.
It wasn’t easy. I went from a studio with two cats to a house with 35… then 50. I was overwhelmed, unprepared, and often on my own. I made mistakes, cried many tears, and thought of giving up. But with the support of my amazing vet and friend Ileana, I kept going.
And then, step by step, I built something real.
Today, I run the first cat rescue in Talamanca. It’s small, but it’s a safe place for the forgotten ones.
Over the past six years, I’ve rescued more than 1,100 cats (and many dogs!) here in the Costa Rican jungle.
I’ve learned so much—about boundaries, about asking for help, about believing in myself. And the most important lesson?
That no matter how hard it gets, I can do this, because these animals deserve a chance.

🌟 ¡Cambiémoslo juntos! 🌟
Hace seis años, por pura casualidad, llegué a Costa Rica. Fue allí donde conocí a Zoe, mi hermosa bebé, mi corazón. Aún no era mía, tenía que esperar el permiso para adoptarla. Pero antes de que eso sucediera, desapareció. La busqué desesperada, sin éxito. Horas más tarde, mi mejor amiga Ileana me llamó: Zoe había regresado. Y al día siguiente, por fin, se convirtió en mi compañera.
Estaba aterrada. Nunca había cuidado de un animal en mi vida. Hasta ese momento había vivido con una mochila, viajando de un lugar a otro sin raíces. Pero Zoe lo cambió todo: me dio un motivo para quedarme, para echar raíces y crecer.
Mientras esperaba a Zoe, acogí a mi primer gato, al que llamé simplemente Cat. Así nació Los Gatitos de Marlies. Primero fue uno, luego otro, después una mamá con cuatro bebés… y de repente, mi pequeño estudio estaba lleno de almas peludas que necesitaban amor. Lo que empezó como un accidente se convirtió en mi misión de vida.
No fue fácil. Pasé de vivir con dos gatos a tener 35… luego 50. Me sentía abrumada, sin recursos ni conocimientos, y muchas veces estuve sola. Cometí errores, lloré mucho, pensé en rendirme. Pero gracias al apoyo de mi increíble veterinaria y amiga Ileana, seguí adelante.
Paso a paso, logré construir algo real.
Hoy dirijo el primer refugio de gatos en Talamanca. Es pequeño, pero es un lugar seguro para los olvidados. En estos seis años he rescatado a más de 1,100 gatos (y muchos perros también!) aquí en la selva costarricense.
He aprendido mucho: a poner límites, a pedir ayuda, a creer en mí misma. Y lo más importante: aprendí que, aunque sea difícil, sí puedo hacerlo, porque estos animales merecen una oportunidad.
