The following scholarship is being provided in the name of Ms. Sylvia Matthews. Matthews was a lifelong learner. In 1969 Matthews graduated from Chicago State University with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education, she would then go back to school multiple times for multiple different reasons. In 1992 she graduated again from Chicago State with her Masters of Science in Guidance and Counseling with a focus on mental health and substance abuse. In 1995 she would complete all degree requirements for a second Masters of the Arts in Psychology. In 1997 she would graduate again from Governors State University completing a third Masters in Education for Administration and Supervision. And finally, after coursework was completed in 1999 at Chicago State one last time, she would clock 70+ hours of administrative work beyond her Masters degree. Throughout all of this Matthews was a dedicated Curie Condor. Matthews began her career at Curie Metro High School on the southwest side of Chicago in 1994. However, prior to that she had spent time at several elementary schools, was a Special Education teacher in the Cook County Jail School and was an Addiction Counselor at Loretto Hospital. The mainstay of her career at Curie was as a Dean of Students, a position that she would stay in for twenty-four years until she retired in 2018. While Matthews was in charge of discipline, her duties and capabilities went well beyond this. Matthews was a mentor to many, a collaborative colleague with teachers and staff and always ensured that students were getting the most out of their time at Curie Metro High School. Matthews left a true imprint on the lives and school community at Curie.
