Derek is an 8-year-old boy with an ultra-rare gene, SAMD9L, which has only about 25 cases worldwide. His specific mutation is understood to be the ONLY in the world. It impacts the blood and the brain and caused a form of cancer requiring a bone marrow transplant. There is no cure for the leukodystrophy that it causes. Derek's parents live in NC but his treatment team is in PA at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Derek cannot travel via air transportation due to his immunosuppression so the family must make the drive.
This family is in need of transportation cost assistance for gas and unforeseen costs of vehicle maintenance and mechanical issues as well as assistance with basic bills for the month. Help us do whatever we can to get Derek to his treatment in PA and to help alleviate his parents of the stress that comes with a rare diagnosis!
