"Hello! I'm GamerBuddy and I'm here to do research!"
GamerBuddy is the first of its kind -- a novel technology capable of accurately and precisely measuring video game play without requiring guestimations from participants, invading player privacy, or selling data to third parties. Erected from Haylei's drive to help her friends and community by investigating the health behavior of adult video game players, GamerBuddy is the first objective research tool capable of quantitatively measuring one activity of for-fun (leisure) sedentary behavior and is capable of becoming the gold standard of objective sedentary behavior measurement. Through GamerBuddy, research on video game players becomes more clear, precise, and accurate, reducing the likelihood of producing misleading information about the health behaviors and outcomes of this group.

Background:
Often stereotyped as lazy, resistant to exercise, and obese due to outdated findings about their gaming and exercise participation, adult video game players (VGPs) are treated as though they're unable to meet recommended physical activity and dietary guidelines (Arnaez et. al, 2018; Weaver et al., 2009). Realistically, these out-of-date results likely instilled disinterest in researching video game play and health outcomes in adults, with only a handful of studies investigating physical activity and exercise behavior in this group (DiFrancisco-Donoghue et al., 2023; Dowdell et. al., 2024; Lepp et al., 2023; Scoggins et al., 2025). Instead, most reserach focuses on how video game play affects the mental health (aka, aggression/violence/depression etc.) of children and teens.
To combat the lack of research and refocus care and attention to adults, Haylei researches the relationship between video game play and physical activity among adult VGPs. She began her research in 2019 while completing her Masters degree at the University of Texas at Austin and has since continued her studies through Texas Christian University's Health Sciences doctoral program. Haylei's passion for this topic identified a glaring issue in sedentary behavior research: all for-fun electronic media use is grouped into a single category with no regard for differences media types.
Research focused on leisure sedentary behavior (i.e., lying, reclining, or sitting for long periods of time while playing video games, watching TV, reading books, etc.) group these activities into one category. Compared to other forms of electronic media, video gaming requires focus, active controller/keyboard inputs, and strategizing their game play. In comparison, watching TV or scrolling on social media requires less thought and focus. Despite these differences, video gaming is treated the same as other forms of electronic media. This is due to the nonexistance of objective, quantiative technology capable of measuring specific activities of sedentary behavior.
Behold GamerBuddy, a novel technology capable of accurately and precisely measuring video game play without requiring self-reported data from participants. GamerBuddy is the first objective research tool capapble of quantitatively measuring one activity of leisure time sedentary behavior. Accordingly, GamerBuddy has the potential to become the gold standard of objectively quantifying at least one activity of leisure time sedentary behavior. Through GamerBuddy, research on video game play becomes more clear, precise, and accurate, reducing the likelihood of producing misleading information about this group.
