Lemons suggest sourness or misfortune in life; making lemonade is turning them into something positive or creating a better outcome.

Why Suitcases?

Dignity: Giving foster youth garbage bags to carry their belongings can be dehumanizing and strip them of their dignity. It sends a message that they are not worthy of proper luggage and can contribute to feelings of shame and low self-esteem.

Practicality: Garbage bags are not designed for carrying belongings and can easily rip or tear, causing the foster youth to lose or damage their possessions. Additionally, garbage bags are not weather-resistant and can leave items vulnerable to damage from rain, snow, or other weather conditions.

Stigma: When foster youth are seen carrying garbage bags, it can lead to negative stereotypes and assumptions about them. It can also reinforce the belief that foster youth are unwanted or disposable, further stigmatizing them and making it harder for them to integrate into their new homes and communities.

Together we can help make the world a little sweeter! Your generosity is appreciated.

And a special thanks for believing in a cause that we also believe in. Children in foster care receiving garbage bags as a practical and dignified way of carrying their belongings is truly a misfortune. Thank you for caring that 50% of the youth that transition out of foster care don't have a high school diploma or GED, or that less than 4 percent will ever obtain a 4-year degree. And thank you for making us your choice, to help make life a little sweeter for youth from historically underserved communities.
