When he was just 16, Mahdi was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to a life behind bars. But his story doesn’t start there… Madhi was born in Somalia. He was offered an opportunity to come to the United States with his late friend's parents – leaving his life and his parents behind. Unfortunately, when Mahdi had arrived, he was abandoned due to complications between the parents who brought him here. Madhi spent the next few years of his life in foster homes. From the beginning, Mahdi was set up for a life in the system and by no wrongdoing of himself. At 16 Mahdi was arrested for a crime. With no true family, no real support, Mahdi was forced to face the system on his own. Madhi was not offered a fair trial, a fair chance or fight. He was told to be quiet, which in turn lead others to believe he was in fact guilty when really this young man just could not find the words to process or understand what was happening around him. He watched his freedom slip away, a community turn their back in silence, confusion, frustration, and heart broken. Mahdi’s fight never stopped. He worked tirelessly while behind walls to find ways to prove the innocence he knew was true in his heart.
