For Women By Women, Period began when our founder Carrington Baker learned that more than half of the population of menstruators are affected by period poverty. She decided to pull together an extremely diverse collective of women to tackle period poverty head on. Each woman brings her own story to the quilt work that is our team, yet we are held together by a common thread- a belief. The belief being that every menstruator, regardless of class, race, sexuality, or gender identity has a right to easy, affordable and non-discriminatory access to menstruating products. We believe that along with providing necessary menstruating products, we can help end the stigma of periods that keep women silenced through increased education as well. What makes For Women By Women, Period unique is our focus on the health of female sexual organs as a whole in order to better allow females to discuss their menstruation as a regular function essential to the health of their bodies.
Individuals who menstruate across the United States face the expense of menstrual products every month, but for many they are unable to afford the basic necessity of pads and tampons. The price of period products forces menstruators to choose between pads or tampons and affording the cost of living. Not only is this unfair but this is only thought about by those who are not in that unfortunate situation, and not those that could help, which is what FWBW. wants to change.
