THE CONCEPT: Simple, economically sustainable, and empowering:
Food Secured Schools Africa (FSSA) is a registered social enterprise in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The core intervention model is that FSSA offers technical support and seedlings to low income parents who access the unused land of the schools and then sell their products through the School Feeding Program. The vegetables and fruits become a source of income for the parents and a source of fresh and nutritious food for the children enrolled in education programs. Thus FSSA is the starting ignition for a sustainable food security model.
Instead of aid hands-over that is typical for NGO approach, FSSA looks at people and resources and makes the best of them.
OUR RESULTS 2019-2022
YOUR CONTRIBUTION:
For each 3500 usd raised we are able to initiate one new school garden. The funding covers:
- facilitation between parent groups and school administration for the access to land;
- space clean-up and transport of extra soil (where necessary);
- purchase of tools, seeds, vegetable and tree seedlings;
- practical training to parents and school staff for the garden set-up;
- follow up training and technical assistance.
The approach of Food Secured Schools Africa has received in 2021 one of the young projects awards by Lush Spring Prize for social and environmental regeneration.
