We are in crisis. Not just our organization, but our nation. The president has announced plans to require government-issued ID to vote and to ban vote by mail for nearly everyone except the very ill or “far away military.” For most of us, getting an ID is an inconvenience. But for 26 million American adults, it’s impossible.
For 8 years, Spread The Vote + Project ID has been breaking down those barriers. We’ve put 15,000 IDs into the hands of future voters, and 92% of our eligible clients registered to vote. But registration alone is not enough. Microbarriers — from transportation challenges to confusing election rules to being jailed pretrial — keep people from turning out.
This is a solvable crisis. We’re fighting back by covering the full cost of IDs, supporting voters with ballot plans, distributing nonpartisan voter guides, running the only nationwide Vote By Mail from Jail program, and building coalitions to expand access.
Now, we’re launching our most ambitious project yet: Encyclopedia Politica — the first-ever interactive guide to every elected office in America.
This groundbreaking civic education tool will empower people everywhere to understand government and engage in democracy. But right now, we don’t have the funding to get it off the ground.
The situation is desperate, but solvable. We know how to do this — and we’ve been doing it for years. But we need your help to keep going and to launch the tools our democracy urgently needs.
Please consider donating today, sharing this fundraiser, or starting your own campaign to support this work. Just email us at development@spreadthevote.org and we'll send you a copy of our toolkit. Together, we can fix our democracy — one ID, one voter, and one ballot at a time.
