For my 30th birthday this year, I’m partnering with ELEM to raise funds for programs that empower high-risk Arab-Israeli youth, helping them overcome obstacles and build brighter futures.

Established in 1982, ELEM is Israel’s leading non-profit for at-risk youth, serving over 12,500 annually through 50+ programs. With a large volunteer base, ELEM offers life-saving interventions for issues like substance abuse, homelessness, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and general mental health challenges.

But what does "high-risk" mean for Arab-Israeli youth in Israel? I want to share the story of one young person who participated in ELEM's programs, highlighting their challenges and the impact this support can have on transforming lives.

Four years ago, H* escaped a violent home. Due to his sexual orientation, he had been severely abused by his family. At only 16, he found himself alone, homeless, and using his body to survive.

ELEM’s outreach team found H on the streets of Haifa one night. Over many weeks, ELEM built a relationship with H, who eventually agreed to stop into HaLev (The Heart), a 24/7 shelter for youth like him. Over 70% of the youth in HaLev are Arab-Israeli.

H received immediate humanitarian aid—a place to rest, shower, and eat without judgment. At HaLev, he began personal guidance with ELEM staff. After two years of tailored support, he reduced reliance on sex work, found a new job, rented an apartment, and is now studying industrial engineering at the Technion.

ELEM’s core principle is offering non-judgmental support and meeting youth where they are. This approach allowed H to join HaLev and rebuild his life. He is not alone: 25% of youth in HaLev voluntarily quit sex work entirely, and 50% significantly reduce it. 75% reduce self-harm behaviors, 85% claim personal rights and legal support, and 90% form stable, non-exploitative relationships with adults.

ELEM is campaigning to renovate HaLev Haifa, upgrade its facilities, and add a bomb shelter as part of broader efforts to support its Northern programs, including services for Arab youth. Rocket attacks have tragically impacted cities like Majd Al-Krum, where ELEM had already been providing support for years. ELEM also runs a digital program with an Arabic chat platform.

Your donation today will directly help ELEM maintain this vital programs and protect Israel’s most vulnerable youth. Help me make a difference: support HaLev Haifa and ELEM's work in the north today!
