Psychoacoustic model and different bitrates
The most important characteristic of an encoder, which affects the quality of encoding, is the psychoacoustic model used by it. It must be noted that the model must vary for different bitrate categories. Just as using MS/IS stereo results in higher quality at lower bitrates, but only lowers quality at medium and high bitrates, so the different components of the model may have maximum bitrates that are useful, but should not be used at higher bitrates.
Encoders based on the original ISO code most often continue to use a rather weak version of the psychoacoustic model used in it. But we still obtain very good results at high bitrates, and many people like it better than FhG IIS encoders. The reason may be that psychoacoustic model in FhG IIS encoders is same for all bitrates and more suitable for average and low bitrates, whereas for high bitrates it is redundant and needs to be attenuated, whereas ISO model appeared to be well, although not perfectly, adapted for high bitrates. But the issue of FhG encoders versus ISO-based encoders remains open.
In the most advanced of the ISO-based encoders, Lame, the model was significantly improved, so much so that the encoder is slightly inferior to the FhG IIS at low bitrates. It can be said that there is already a relatively small part of the original ISO model left in Lame.
