Gas block set screws and locking compounds always fail. What is your favorite jig to align the datums for the front sight base and the gas port hole when drilling and reaming for taper pins in a non-factory setting? We use dedicated fixtures at work for the production runs, but it is difficult to handle all the different varieties when doing custom gunsmithing work.

Regarding gas port-sized diameters of an AR-15/AR-10, how can that effect the cycle of operation of that particular weapon? Is the topic of having proper port-sized of the gas being bled into the cycle of operation, often a misunderstood topic with certain commercial manufacturers, similar in the case of proper drilling and pinning a gas-block to the barrel vs. using set-screws?
Lastly, for external-piston firearms such as an AK-47 or an AR-18 type of system, can they still have an improper port-size diameters that can throw the system off or eventually have fire-cutting around the gas-port?

Hi Chris, you may be aware that I was a contributor to the first 'Black Rifle' book by the late great Blake Stevens. I had access to the ArmaLite promo movie in 16mm cine format that was in the hands of Jacques Michault of Sidem International who was one of the original 3 distributors of the AR10 rifle. I made a VHF video tape copy of the movie and sent a copy to Blake-Stevens and he reproduced some still images in the first Black Rifle book. That was in 1984.... I recently got access to the original 16mm cine 'master' and will be making a digital 'frame by frame' copy of it (the copy from 1984 was analogue video), you are welcome to include it on your channel (we will be putting it up on our Armourers Bench channel too) as you are after all a huge Stoner fan👍

What are your thoughts on the Timney trigger kits that converts Glock pistols from double action to single action?
Many uninformed internet experts believe that converting a Glock to single action removes one or more of Glock's 3 safety mechanism. The trigger safety, firing pin safety, and drop ledge safety are still present. The sear is inertially unbalanced in the Y-axis, but disengagement is opposed by a sear spring and friction from the sear interface.
The testing of the triggers on the MTS machines and shock testers look really nice, a game changer. Unfortunately, Timney chose a 3 pound trigger pull weight.

How often do firearm manufacturers perform a SFMEA (Systems FMEA) and a corresponding FMEM (Failure Mode Effects Management) on firearm designs, or is that not an industry practice in the firearms field?
I don't want to single out any firearm manufacturers or designs, but A LOT of failures could have been prevented by something as simple as a SMFEA and a FMEM. When designing other military equipment we have to do this, but I see glaring errors in firearm designs that would have been caught by a baby engineer doing a SMFEA. A lot of problems can be easily avoided.

What do you see as the upcoming technological advancements to the AR platform in the next decade?
The engineering parents in my neighborhood worked for Mellonics (Litton Industries) for Army contracts during the improvement program for the M16A1. It was cool to hear those engineers discuss what was needed to make the M16A1 better for the Army. They were very upset at the Marine Corps Officers and the incompetence of the Ordnance Corps and Natick when it came to the adoption of the M16A2. The engineers in the early 1980's well analyzed the ergonomic and reliability needs that ultimately became part of the ARs we know today.
