Protecting Florida Bay through Education, Advocacy, Community Action, and support for Everglades restoration
Florida Bay Forever is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the Florida Keys, dedicated to protecting and restoring Florida Bay through education, advocacy, community engagement, and support for Everglades restoration.
Our story began in 2016, when a devastating seagrass die-off destroyed an estimated 40,000 acres of seagrass in Florida Bay. Concerned Florida Keys residents came together in response, recognizing that the health of the bay—and the future of the community that depends on it—could not be taken for granted.
Florida Bay is an extraordinary ecosystem that supports marine wildlife, sustains local fisheries, and helps define life in the Florida Keys. Yet its health is closely tied to freshwater flows, water management, and the progress of Everglades restoration. Protecting the bay requires more than awareness of these challenges. It requires an informed, engaged community ready to be part of the solution.
That is where Florida Bay Forever comes in.
Through hands-on environmental education, community outreach, partnerships, and advocacy, we help students, residents, and visitors understand the connections between healthy waters, thriving ecosystems, and our quality of life. We bring science and conservation into the community through school programs, guided nature walks, restoration projects, water-quality education, public presentations, and conversations with scientists and local fishing communities.
At Green Turtle Hammock Nature Preserve in Islamorada, we create opportunities for people of all ages to experience the natural world firsthand. We work with schools, homeschool groups, libraries, conservation partners, and community organizations to inspire curiosity, build environmental stewardship, and turn understanding into action.
Our work also helps keep Everglades restoration connected to the people it affects most. By sharing information, building relationships, and supporting science-based solutions, we help strengthen the community commitment needed to protect Florida Bay for generations to come.
A healthy Florida Bay means a healthier future for our wildlife, our fisheries, our communities, and the place we call home.
