The COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on the Hmong and other Southeast Asian communities, especially our family members, small businesses, and nonprofits in the City of Sacramento. Like our neighbors and friends, our community is faced with many uncertainties. Families are losing jobs, small businesses are being closed, and nonprofits are limited as to the service and education they can provide to the community. Although our City and community leaders are working endlessly to meet the needs of the constituents of Sacramento, the Hmong and other Southeast Asian communities lack access to available services due to language barriers and a lack of incorporating cultural sensitivity for resources currently available.
After more than three weeks of the Shelter in Place order from the Governor, Sacramento County and City of Sacramento, many of our families, community members, and small businesses are struggling with many questions unanswered. As a result, Hmong Youth & Parents United, a non-profit that has been serving the Hmong community in Sacramento since 2012 has decided to collaborate with other Hmong community leaders in effort to raise funding towards two food giveaways in North Sacramento and South Sacramento. The giveaways will provide essential supplies and food to families that are purchased from small businesses in North Sacramento as well as South Sacramento that have been economically impacted by this health crisis. While we applaud and appreciate the local food banks for doing a great job in distributing food to needy families, we endeavor to assist with providing cultural/ethnic essential items that our community consumes on a daily basis.
Furthermore, we want to encourage our community members to have faith in our community given the rise of racism towards Asian Americans at this time. Therefore, we are asking you to join us during this time of need and we are respectfully requesting you to donate to our campaign. Hmong Youth and Parents United has worked diligently to secure monetary donations and donations of goods to make the giveaways possible.
