Disasters: Deconstructed Jargon Jar

Disasters: Deconstructed is a podcast reflecting on human society from diverse disciplinary and ideological perspectives to understand the root causes of disasters.

We (Dr Ksenia Chmutina and Dr Jason von Meding) are disaster scientists and communicators and we often reflect on the jargon we use unintentionally - or because we don't find a better way to explain a thing. In our show we have often joked about a fictional "jargon jar" when either of us or a guest is guilty of this!

This Donorbox is our effort to do some good with the jargon jar idea! We care deeply about reaching audiences outside of academia, and what better way to share disaster knowledge (minus the jargon) than with an elementary/primary age audience! We will be scheduling classes in schools local to us to talk about disasters - the first one (confirmed) will be with a 2nd Grade class (incl. Jason's son) in Gainesville.

The plan is for us, our guests and our audience to contribute to this jargon jar.  If you make a donation, we would love to hear what jargon you used and any reflections on how you might explain it differently in future! We will make a donation to the classroom that we visit when we visit the school.

We hope that this will encourage people to intentionally find better ways to communicate outside our exclusive insider bubbles! Thanks so much for supporting :)
