Digital Health Training for Family Doctors Worldwide
The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) is proud to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reshaping the digital health training landscape for GPs and family doctors worldwide.
To bring this vision to life, we're calling on all who are passionate about the future of family medicine to support our crowdfunding campaign.
The pressure on primary care services is escalating globally, demanding innovative solutions to ensure sustainable, high-quality care. Digital health technologies offer immense potential to meet these challenges head-on, but the success of these innovations hinges on the ability of GPs/FDs to integrate them into daily practice effectively. Preliminary evidence indicates a significant gap in digital health training within current educational curricula, underscoring the necessity of this project.
The specific aim of this project are to
a) identify the current level of digital health literacy among GPs;
b) map the existing training on digital health, both in pre- and post-graduate curricula;
c) to identify key needs for training in digital health, and
d) to develop recommendations to guide the implementation of digital health training in pre- and post-graduate curricula.
By supporting our project, you are investing in the future of healthcare—a future where digital health is seamlessly integrated into primary care, improving the lives of patients and practitioners alike.

Description
The increasing demand for primary care calls for innovative solutions, including the use of digital health technologies. This project aims to assess the digital health training needs of General Practitioners/Family Doctors (GPs/FDs) globally. The goals are to determine GPs' current digital health literacy, map existing training programs, identify key training needs, and provide recommendations for integrating digital health education into curricula. The project employs a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, consensus-building, and focus groups. The results will be used to enhance GP/FD proficiency with digital health tools and improve primary care services on a global scale.
Overall Goal
This work aims to evaluate the training needs of GPs/FDs on digital health, and to develop recommendations for policymakers and other healthcare stakeholders, to effectively embed relevant training in pre- and post-graduate curricula. Ultimately, this work will endeavour to support GPs/FDs’ transition to a digitally-empowered healthcare system.
Relevance of the project
Digital health technologies are revolutionising the healthcare landscape, offering numerous opportunities to enhance patient care, improve efficiency, and streamline clinical workflows. The adoption of digital health technologies surged in recent years, encompassing electronic health records, telemedicine, healthcare apps, remote patient monitoring, and other data-driven tools. GPs/FDs play a pivotal role in delivering primary care services, and their effective adoption of digital health tools is essential to leverage the full potential of these technologies. Therefore, the successful integration of digital health into general practice heavily relies on the GPs' proficiency and comfort with these technologies, bringing new complexities and concerns. Therefore, this project is highly relevant as optimising the use of digital health technologies can offer significant opportunities to enhance patient care and improve clinical workflows.
Problems it addresses
Many GPs and Family Doctors (GPs/FDs) face challenges when trying to use digital health technologies in their daily practice due to insufficient training, technical support, and awareness of available tools. These challenges include adapting consultation skills, interpreting data from digital health tech, and managing workload, and ethical, and legal concerns. Little is known about the current state of digital health training. A proposed study seeks to assess GPs/FDs' digital health training needs, aiming to support their safe and sustainable adoption of digital technologies in primary care.
