Goal

Last year, I had the pleasure of raising just over $500 with my offline and online communities to contribute to the Trans Journalists Association. It's time to see if we can not only do it again, but aim even higher.

I wish I could say things for the trans community have gotten better since 2025, but that would be dishonest. The community is still been targeted by state governments, including but not limited to the US and UK governments. From legislation that affects access to gender-affirming care and bathrooms, to online and IRL harassment from transphobes, there is an active attempt to make both public and private life nothing short of hellish for trans people.

TJA's dedication to promoting accurate and nuanced coverage of trans rights and communities, as well as fostering upcoming gender-expansive journalists, is no less urgent than it was over a year ago. It extends past protecting a community that is being unduly targeted by parties with a gross amount of resources. To attack trans people is to attack all people; to punish bodily autonomy; to silence freedom of expression; to be anti-human.

That's why I'm digging my heels in with TJA and ask you, reader, to help me contribute to their goal of $25,000 by helping me get as close to $750 as possible by December 1, 2026. It will help TJA sustain the resources, programs, and community their members rely on that also transform the journalism industry.

Here’s how your donation — no matter the amount — can help:

- $25 aids timely coverage guidance that informs the whole journalism industry about best practices for covering trans communities and the news that affects us.

- $50 keeps our annual memberships free for trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive journalists and students.

- $100 supports the expansion of our Stylebook & Coverage Guide, a tool for journalists to improve news coverage of trans communities, and our Workplace & Holistic Safety Guide, a tool that helps newsroom leaders and allies support trans workers.

- $250 helps us provide low-cost and free training to newsrooms, TJA members, and community groups.

- $500 covers a travel scholarship to attend our inaugural Trans Journalists Summit.

- $750 fortifies our Reporting Fellowship which directly invests in trans storytelling.

- $1,000 fully covers a professional development stipend for a journalist or student.
