What is Diatomeas magazine?
Diatomeas is an open-access bilingual digital magazine developed by the Boana association and rooted in Patagonia. Diatomeas Magazine is a scientific mediation initiative, with a political ecology perspective. The initiative looks at what we know and have learned about the Patagonian region, combining artistic expression and scientific mediation. We explore how we can build a fairer society and a better environment. Through artistic expression, we encourage thinking on desirable futures for younger generations.

Why your contribution matters
This independently produced magazine is free because we don't want to be constrained by advertising. We want to retain our freedom to produce it without any limitations. Our aim is to promote it locally in Patagonia, and particularly in educational establishments because we want to raise awareness among younger people about the environmental and social context in which they live. The magazine is available in Spanish and English so that we can reach international visitors who enjoy this unique World Heritage site.

Who is behind this initiative?
Boana is a French association led by young women who are passionate about supporting local initiatives for the conservation of ecosystems and adaptation to climate change. Boana is all about building knowledge and taking action to highlight and care for the links between humans and their environment. Its main areas of work are participatory conservation of ecosystems, adaptation to climate change and agroecology. Boana has been up and running since its creation in El Chaltén, Patagonia, Argentina. Its members are spread between France and Argentina, and they've come together to develop projects to protect the environment from a community, open and plural perspective. Patagonia, the mirror of our future – first edition
The town of El Chaltén is part of Los Glaciares National Park, a World Heritage Site, and has an enormous international reputation for its privileged access to mountain tourism in a unique environment. The community of El Chaltén is the guardian of one of the world's main reserves of solid fresh water. Considering current climate projections and the role of water in sustaining the capitalist economy, El Chaltén is a particularly strategic location. This unique site is highly vulnerable to climate change, and tackling local impacts requires mobilizing scientific, artistic and intergenerational processes.
