Mary Holmes Bryant was born into slavery in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana, around 1825, and lived to be 102 years old. As the cook on the Cottingham Plantation, she used what little standing she had to make life better for her family and the people around her — quietly burying silver coins in her backyard year after year, money that eventually built her grandsons' first house. She raised six children, saw her family through emancipation and up the Ouachita River to Ouachita Parish, and helped build the community that became Richwood. She is my daughter Aaliyah's fourth great-grandmother, and Aaliyah is here because Mary spent a lifetime investing in children she would never meet. We give to First 5 in her memory because that is exactly what she did.
