The Artificial Kidney Unit (AKU) of the General Hospital of Chios has been serving the island's kidney patients (62 patients today) since 1993. Nine of the dialysis machines in the unit are outdated models (2003–2006) and frequently malfunction despite exhaustive maintenance, resulting in patient complaints. The Greek government is currently unable to provide the necessary equipment, despite the hospital's requests. Recent scientific studies indicate that modern hemodialysis methods (online HDF), using these machines, improve the quality of life and survival expectancy of hemodialysis patients.
The Chios Society of Detroit, in conjunction with the Chios Societies of America and Canada, has agreed unanimously to implement a fundraising campaign to raise $17,000 (including VAT) to provide a new dialysis machine for the Nephrology Department in Chios. AHEPA Omega Chapter 371, located in Detroit, Michigan, matched the $5,000 raised by the Aristidis N. Moschouris Memorial, contributing to the initial $10,000.
