At Norton Middle School, our 6th grade science program emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-based learning that allows students to explore real-world scientific concepts. We are seeking a NEED mini grant to purchase essential classroom supplies that will enhance our students’ learning experiences and deepen their understanding of life science.
Specifically, these funds will be used to purchase owl pellets and live earthworms, which will allow students to investigate animal structures, behaviors, and ecological roles. Dissecting owl pellets will help students learn about food webs, predator-prey relationships, and skeletal systems, while observing earthworms will give them the opportunity to study animal behavior, adaptations, and soil ecosystems. These interactive experiences support the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Standards and provide all learners—across general education, special education, and English language learner classrooms—an opportunity to engage meaningfully with science.
By funding these materials, the NEED mini grant will help our students move beyond the textbook and into authentic scientific exploration, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
