With gratitude to our Mother Earth and to the Indigenous Peoples whose land sustains us and whose resilience inspires us, we renew our commitment to community, to social, and economic justice, to the preservation of our seeds, and to our beautiful Earth. The Garden's Edge supports the dreams of emerging changemakers through small, creative projects that improve health conditions, food security, food sovereignty, family income, local economies, cultural preservation, and leadership. Creative Solutions Projects (CSP) are designed to address the lack of economic opportunities that cause young people to migrate from their rural communities, often leaving behind their families and their culture. We support people whose creative ideas encourage collaboration, curiosity, and the strengthening of community and culture through the intergenerational sharing of skills and knowledge. The cost of each project is between $100 - $1,250, depending on the scope and complexity of the project, and the experience of the participant. Our goal for 2022 is to raise $10,000 for CSP. All donations will go toward funding this year's projects. Creative Solutions Projects Grants are for business start-ups and eco-friendly projects with long-term accompaniment that includes: Leadership skills such as effective communication. Budgeting, grant writing, and project management. Opportunities for learning specific skills, and technical accompaniment. We review and approve CSP applications on a rolling basis. The time-line for completion is flexible, depending on the nature of the project. Consequently, we receive, review, and approve applications throughout the year. After participants have successfully completed their CSP they can submit a new application. |
Still more, the pervasive lack of opportunities for youth are leading more and more young people to make the difficult decision to leave their families, their communities and often their culture behind in search for jobs. |
Whether it be learning new skills to expand a particular service they offer their community or planting home gardens, these projects allow leaders to build on their dreams while meeting the needs of their communities.
Creative Solutions Projects have included: compost worm farming, medicinal plant gardens, the production of short films as cultural documentaries, the expansion of a community apothecary, the planting of fruit trees, and a social communications campaign on COVID-19 safety in the Maya Achi language.
