Coin Drive "Pennies for a Portico"

Dear friends,

We have to help a very important building by repairing, restoring, and rebuilding a very important part of it.

That's the Howland Cultural Center, the "Jewel of Beacon" And that part is the one you walk through every time you come in. It's called a portico, and it is beautiful. Or at least, it was until time, weather and deterioration took their toll.

So, we're asking for your pennies. And your nickels, dimes, and quarters. Even dollars will do. Years ago, a penny by Beacon's school children raised thousands of dollars that helped rebuild Howland's slate roofing.

So here's the new plan to fix our portico, and perhaps get other needed work done. Our target is $150,000. We already have some support and savings, but we need more. So please:

1. Dig out your containers of coins! You know, the cans, buckets, bags, boxes, or other holders where you empty your pockets of coins.

2. Bring it to the Howland Cultural Center any time we're open.

3. We will count the coins and let you know how much your pile was worth.

4. If you wish, we'll give you a receipt — and a big thank you!

Together, we'll get the job done. We'll fix up this Jewel of Beacon, designed by famed architect Richard Morris Hunt and funded by patron Joseph Howland in 1872. A little over a year ago, we celebrated the 150th anniversary, and now, we will raise $150,000.
