Thanks to all of our donors, and the hard work of our team, the students, staff, and community, the garden is continuing to produce vegetables. The first school term of the year has just ended and the garden provided much-needed food to students to improve their nutrition. Careful tending of the crops has helped this garden flourish. Annette is one of our advisors who has worked hard on this garden!
There is nothing better than a beautiful eggplant! Tomatoes are growing too. Some more weeding will be happening this week. The kids are enjoying and benefitting from all of the vegetables! Thank you so much to all of you who have contributed to this project and continue to contribute. Our plan is to start another school garden at Buwanume School next month.
Today the school cooks at Nayenga Primary picked some of the vegetables that were ready and added them to the school lunch. This is the difference a donation makes! So far the p6 and p7 students are now back at school so they get to enjoy the spinach, cucumbers and sukuma wiki (collard greens). We have hopes to expand the garden at Nayenga since there are 770 students and we know there is a lot of need at Buwanume School. Your support is making an incredible difference in improving nutrition for these children. Thank You!!
As you can see in the photos the spinach is doing well as are many of the other vegetables. More weeding will take place next week. I think Prossy and Franco are anxious for the students to return from break so they can help with the weeding! The mahogany, eucalyptus, and biscofia trees are all doing well!
The sunflowers are keeping watch on the growing vegetables and have been a good companion plant. Prossy is checking on the garden frequently and the cucumbers are about ready to pick. These will be given to families in need until school starts in the new year. We have a hope to raise funds to increase the plantings and add another school garden.
More work continues in the garden and all the crops are doing well. We expect that a lot will be able to be harvested when the students return to school in mid- January for the 2024 school year in Uganda.
More eggplants, bitter tomatoes, and spinach have been planted and everything is growing well. While students in Uganda are on their summer holiday until mid-January, the staff will be checking on the garden and doing the weeding. Students will still be tending to their trees. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We hope to be able to fund gardens at more schools.
Our master gardener, Franco, is giving a description of the weed shield and drip irrigation. These are techniques that are new for this rural area of Uganda. The rains have continued which is keeping the rain barrels full and allowing the crops and trees to really take hold. Thanks so much for your donations for this project. If you can, please share with friends and family. We would love to get started with the next school.
Here's a brief look at Nayenga Primary, the site of our first school garden. The crops and trees have been planted and now the students and staff are keeping an eye on everything. From the tour you can see the challenges they have with basic food. The kids have little to eat each day. You are helping to change that with your donation. You can continue to help by just sharing our project on social media.
It's been a busy week in the school garden at Nayenga Primary. Seeds are in the ground and are germinating. You can see the fence is all finished. The students and staff have been checking the crops and trees each day and luckily there has been a good amount of rain so far. Thanks for making this possible!
Here’s some real sweetness for you today. This is Swabula and she is in p6 (6th grade) at Nayega School. Thanks to your giving, trees are being planted today at the school. Students were selected to plant a sapling and then they will be responsible for caring for it. They were all carrying their tree so gently and they were so proud! So much learning is happening as the gardens and trees are planted!
It’s been just a bit over a week since the project started and it’s amazing what has been accomplished. Ground was broken on the first garden at Nayenga Primary School in Kamuli, Uganda. The garden beds have been sectioned off and the fencing is going around the garden. This will keep out the cows and goats! All this work is thanks to your donation. So far we’ve been able to raise $255 this past week to get started.
