It was narrated that Sa'd bin 'Ubadah said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died; shall I give in charity on her behalf?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'What kind of charity is best?' He said: 'Providing drinking water.'” (Sunan an-Nasa'i 3664)
The Gambia suffers from water scarcity and a lack of quality drinking causing great concern, over 45% of water sources are contaminated with E.Coli resulting in 73.2% of the household population with E.Coli in their drinking water. Hence providing wells with clean, safe and much needed drinking water is a top priority for SWG.
Some details of the wells:
Small Well
These wells are hand dug and can take a few weeks to dig and secure. These are about 12 to 15 metres deep. The life expectancy for this well is 20-25 years.
Large Well
A large well provides cleaner water supply for a longer period of time by placing the cast around the concrete until it reaches bottom of the well. The life expectancy for a large well is 25-50 years.
Solar Powered Borehole
A Borehole provides a long term solution to safe and reliable source of clean water. A Borehole can serve a large community even in remote villages. Through expertly drilling several metres into the ground, a solar powered water pump is installed to extract water from the ground.
Provide clean water for people who need it most today.
