“Your left leg needs to be amputated”. It was the most devastating news for an active rugby-playing teenager, Edwin, to hear. His love for the sport came crumbling right in front of him when the doctor shared the news.
With Covid-19, 2020 was a difficult year for all. As everyone entered 2021 while adjusting to the new norm, Edwin’s family were devastated to receive the news that Edwin was diagnosed with bone cancer – Osteosarcoma Left Distal Femur. 2021 turned on to a difficult chapter.
Luck is not on everyone’s sight, but with a little help, we can bring a meaningful difference. MAKNA has helped Edwin with surgical stapler to aid in his amputation and provided him with Hip Disarticulation Prosthesis (leg prosthesis) to help him get back on his feet. These assistances cost a total sum of RM21,449 - RM7,949 and RM13,500 respectively.
Coming from a poor family, he couldn’t have pulled through this ordeal on his own. It was only possible because of donors like you. Edwin is the youngest of four siblings. His family survives with meagre income from his farmer father and third sister who works at a seafood stall as a helper. His mother succumbed to kidney failure and goes for haemodialysis three times a week while his two older siblings work away from their home and have commitments of their own.
Edwin’s hometown is in Mukah, Sarawak which is 150km from Hospital Sibu where he currently receives treatment. For the ease of access for follow up treatment, Edwin and his mother moved to a rented house in Sibu. He now attends school in Form 4 at SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu. The persistent pain on his leg changed his entire life. Nevertheless, Edwin is slowly coping with the changes and is on the road to recovery.
Like Edwin, many poor families affected by cancer undergo challenging circumstances. Therefore, we at MAKNA cannot stop our effort. With your help, we can continue bringing meaningful changes into the lives of cancer patients to face the future. You are the beacon of hope for them.
We humbly appeal for your generous donation to help us with more unfortunate families battling with cancer.
