Dear friends and family,

I am part of a Netherlands-based non-profit organization called Little Leaders Foundation, as their Social Media Manager. My role is to share the organization's mission and raise awareness of the current projects we have undertaken. One of our latest projects is to build a preschool in Mannar, Sri Lanka. I’m raising donations to help complete the construction of the Little Trees Nurtury Preschool 🌳

Why Mannar and why is this important to me?

While Sri Lanka as a whole continues to fight its way through many economic obstacles, cities like Mannar are often neglected. Mannar has been considered one of the poorest states in Sri Lanka with high rates of drug-related crimes as families find a way to make ends meet. This single-handedly affects a child’s education as they are taught things like how to smuggle drugs instead of how to write their name from a young age.

Having studied Psychology, I understood that the early years of a child’s life are one of the most critical phases, and a lack of proper stimulation, support, and nurture can have damaging impacts on the overall development of the child. I believe education is a potent tool as it helps you develop lifelong skills and become more self-aware as individuals and citizens of the world.

Despite growing up in the same country as many of these little kids in Mannar, our childhoods could not be more different. I was privileged enough to have better opportunities and while I’m still grateful for the foundation I have received, it does make me think about how unfair it is. Why should they deserve any less than what I got? Why shouldn’t they have the same opportunities that I had? Why shouldn’t they be allowed to dream big?

With the completion of the Little Trees Nurtury Preschool, we hope to be a safe space for children to educate themselves and become the little leaders of tomorrow. Even though the 26-year-long civil war divided the community of Mannar, we wish to bridge that gap and bring children of all religions to one place promoting unity and harmony once again in Mannar 💛
