Last night I held my son so close and rocked him as I told him "Thank You" as I do each night just before he goes to sleep. I squeezed the moment into the future: how I will be thankful for this moment when I can no longer hold him this way, and then it transported me back to holding my first born son 30 years ago who was the same age. It is the profoundest moment of love and gratitude I've ever felt: pure joy. Love and gratitude transcended time and space. I transcended the fall from the garden.

Eternal Sweetheart
(To be read using your voice)
Inside
she is receiving
a mere consolation
from her sweetheart
and the sun decided
to be just as kind
today.
Birds are singing
one last hoorah
before
the fast approaching
inevitable.
Unseasonably warm
this time of year
isn't it?
Seasons come
season go
soon will come
her season too
and
she'll join him
then
in their season
of the eternal
(shhhhhh to a long whisper)
sweeeeetheeaaaart.
