Hey Legends!
So if you've been following me for a while, you know I've got this crazy plan to build some new bird aviaries AND a massive flight aviary. I did some research and came across the Legends in Tasmania at the Raptor Refuge. I LOVE what they do and they've been doing it long enough to be specialists and experts in their field.
I got in touch with them to ask about their amazing flight aviary - it's the largest flight aviary in the Southern Hemisphere and I really admire they way they're repurposing old telegraph poles and old Tuna/Salmon nets in a way that benefits wildlife.
So I need your help!
We got the project off to a great start. Some amazing people made some significant donations and that got the slab prep and pour done.
The Legend at Jimmy's Metal Fab reached out to me to say he'd love to help by manufacturing all the pens that go on the slab. Jimmy also offered to donate all the raw materials as well as deliver and install. I wasn't comfortable with that so we're paying the raw costs of materials which feels better to me. This means I'll have dedicated areas specifically for birds, and it will be air-gapped - so no escaping if I accidentally leave the door open! As you've seen sometimes I have an influx of birds and I run out of spaces for them, and then because I don't have a dedicated space for them to get their wings back, I have to spend more time throwing birds up into the air and chasing them around which is tiring for both the bird and me!
We made a little video about this project.
We still need to get over to Tassie so I can meet the Legends Craig and Ziggy in person and see how they do things. They have a net there that they said I can have, since you can't really find those things on facebook marketplace! So I'd like to be able to give them something for that.
Then I have to get the net home, and start the second stage of the build. This means cranes, hole diggers, another slab, another shed, and then a crazy day of hoisting that net up into the air and getting it just right.
It's not a simple project, but its a worthy one, and I know it will radically change the opportunity and outcome for birds that come to the Hobby Farm needing help.
So please check the video out here - https://youtu.be/W-BSP3MlLI8?si=yQGb8D1pxN69ymar
and if you can find a few bucks please consider donating them to this project.
I promise I wont let you - or the birds - down.
