Did you know the nutritional value of food varies by multiples of up to 200x depending on what nutrients you are comparing? The Bionutrient Food Association has studied thousands of samples of crops over the last few years and found facts like: One leaf of spinach can have up to 15x the iron of another or, 200x the polyphenols of another.

Learn more about our findings in our 2020 Data Report.

Via our partnership with Our-Sci and their soil stack survey, we collected management data for the food samples we tested and were able to correlate nutrition outcome to farming practices. This data is open source and available on our Data Explorer and Farmers Coffee Shop.

Now, wouldn’t it be amazing if consumers had a tool which would provide them insight to choose food that is better for them and their families?

The Bionutrient Meter does just that!

We’ve built a model that correlates spectral results to our data set to predict a rating of quality, which we refer to as BQI (Bionutrient Quotient Index). The Bionutrient Meter is an  instrument that bounces light off of a crop and connects those results to a dataset of thousands of outcomes to give you a number on where that particular crop sits.

What can this help you do? An example: If you have access to an item like swiss chard, sourced from two different farms or stores, you can assess which most likely has more nutrient value.

Our Mission is to Improve the quality of the Food Supply, and via the consumer having insight and choosing quality food, we can increase the demand for good food, decrease the demand for mass production of low nutrient value food, and share with farmers how to produce quality food.

We’re a nonprofit!  We think it's important to keep the data in the commons, to ensure no single powerful organization has an influence on the data or tools used to measure quality, so we need our community to rally behind this work.

Imagine you didn’t own a meter, but could access the Bionutrient App, which showed you where in your neighborhood the highest quality produce was located? Our funding goal is to upgrade our MVP of the Bionutrient Meter to be user friendly and mass produced at a better cost, with an interactive application for community engagement and insights.

This crowdfunder campaign is to get the design and development going for the next gen meter.
