Completion of the First Six-Bed Intensive Care Unit at Bansang Hospital

We urgently need your support to complete the new six-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Bansang General Hospital. This life-saving facility will transform critical care for a region covering nearly 5,000 km² and serving 600,000 people. Thanks to a partnership between BHA and Power Up Gambia (PUG) of Philadelphia, finances were secured, land adjacent to the hospital’s operating theatres was selected, and construction commenced.

With the foundations and blockwork complete, the project has now entered its vital hospital-grade finishing stages. To move forward, we need to raise £25,000 to complete the main ward, nurses’ station, sluice room, shower and toilet facilities, office, and storeroom. This funding will cover all aspects of the interior installation to include, beds, patient monitors, oxygen supply, air conditioning, aluminium windows and doors, joinery, plasterwork, lighting and electrics, floor and wall tiling, plumbing/shower/toilets/washbasins, plus exterior rendering. Additionally, we are sourcing sustainable, low-resource medical equipment to ensure the ICU operates efficiently and effectively for many years to come.

Senior Nursing Officer Lamin S. Camara has completed Critical-Care training and he and the hospital team are preparing to deliver high-quality ICU care adapted to rural needs. A partnership with the Teaching Hospital in Banjul, 250 miles away, has also enabled additional staff to receive Critical-Care training in readiness for the opening.

This fully equipped ICU will finally allow patients to receive round-the-clock expert care in a calm, dedicated environment.

Currently, a small temporary three-bed room is serving as a stopgap underscoring just how urgently a larger, permanent ICU is needed.
