Help Us Engage Young People to the Wonders of Marine Science and Coastal Conservancy!
BayQuest Rising Tides is a community-driven outreach and at-sea education program designed to mentor young people from disadvantaged communities around the bay area through education, public nature events and onboard eco-tours to elevate awareness of climate resilience, shoreline protection and marine wildlife conservation.
It involves a series of two-day weekend events throughout the summer of 2025 working in collaboration with well-respected frontline community organizations from three (3) underserved communities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Participants in the program will range in ages from 17-23 and reside in the communities of Oakland, Richmond and South San Francisco/Bayview Hunters Point.
With extensive local community engagement, the education component of the program will involve printed materials, online content, community gatherings, field science nature hikes and a series of 3-hour eco-tours aboard a safe, well-known passenger tour vessel uniquely designed as a “classroom at sea”. Each “event” would consist of a 2-day weekend program divided as follows:
___________________
Event Activities
Day 1 - will involve shoreside activities at a local/regional watershed in each community to explore native plants, wildlife and the threat/importance of preparing for rising seas. Activities will include a short nature hike, speakers, educational materials, entertainment, lunch and a “bioblitz” to identify and log each living species encountered during the outing.
___________________
Day 2 - features a 3-hour, naturalist-led eco tour of the local waterfront and out onto San Francisco Bay to learn about tides/currents, safe navigation, biodiversity of marine wildlife and the potential effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems.
___________________
The plan calls for (4) two-day weekend events per year in each community for a total of (12) events during the one year program. Lunch, crew shirts and educational materials will be provided for participants. Transportation will be provided to each event site as needed.
Its goal is to elevate awareness and foster participation in efforts to prepare for sea rise resiliency, shoreline adaptation and coastal access while facilitating on-the-water participation in education/conservation efforts to protect endangered marine wildlife on San Francisco Bay.
Your generous contribution can help make this hands-on learning experience a reality for a new generation of conservation leaders!
