Mask making with the Aunties saved me from isolation, hopelessness and purposelessness during those dark days of the Pandemic. The healing power of the Aunties Sewing Squad was REAL. Thank you for documenting our community efforts in this film, Valerie!
Kristina Wong sewed me a mask in the first weeks of Covid in NYC, when I was quite seriously losing my mind with fear, sorrow, and trauma. I was breaking down because all o heard outside my Brooklyn window was ambulances, 24/7, nonstop, and knowing that eery siren was another dead body and I couldn't fix it, I couldn't stop it, broke me. But Kristina's act of kindness and community care helped so much, knowing she wanted to protect me from the other side of the country. It meant so much then... and it still does. I will never forget it. Kristina is my friend, but she grew the A.S.S. to such a huge contingent of folks who served communities of loved ones and strangers alike all across the country, stepping in where the state had a dictated its responsibility to public health. It's so important that this work be remembered. It is heroic. It is historic. I can't wait for this documentary and I'm glad to support it.
