This pandemic has made it painfully clear that inequities exist in society in almost all facets of life. Almost 1 year into this pandemic, education is one of those hard hit areas and the impacts are far reaching and generational. In Jamaica, the problem is compounded by the lack of access to tablets, computers and internet access, all necessary for students to continue with their learning in a virtual setting.
Alligator Pond is a small, low income fishing village in Manchester where many of the children are not attending in-person classes due to covid restrictions. They do not have access to continue learning virtually because they do not have the tools necessary to virtually learn. Many of their parents have lost income due to the pandemic and even in normal times, would have found it difficult to purchase a tablet for their child. Our goal is to make a difference by providing tablets to as many students as we can.
We cannot stand by while the hope of our future misses out on learning and thus further increasing the achievement gaps between the haves and the have nots. JOIN US in getting tablets into the hands of children who need it and who desperately want to continue their education. The need is GREAT so the more funds we raise, the more need we will be able to meet.
Students who reside in Alligator Pond will be selected by the guidance counselors of the different schools. This organization or none of our volunteers on the ground will make the selection. It will be purely the prerogative of the guidance counselors who already, by the nature of their work, know which children are in most need.
