Communities across Haiti were rocked by a powerful earthquake on August 14, 2021. Airlink is assisting partner organizations responding to immediate needs including search and rescue, medical care, food, access to clean water, and emergency shelter. Airlink’s response is expected to continue through to long-term recovery.
Airlink has a long history of helping the people of Haiti through earthquakes, hurricanes and more. Our relationships across the region help ensure our ability to rapidly respond to the critical needs of the people there.
This 7.2-magnitude earthquake, which was followed by a series of aftershocks, struck 5 miles from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, not far from the capital of Port-au-Prince. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, many buildings have been leveled with reports of over 1,900 people confirmed killed, 10,000 injured, and +83,000 houses damaged or destroyed by the quake.
Recovery efforts are being hampered by heavy rains, which have caused mudslides that have blocked roads in the region.This disasters comes at a time in which Haiti is not only facing a political crisis but ongoing efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 as well.
