AFRICAN ASYLUM-SEEKERS WANT TO LEARN
In response to a growing need for English language training for Africans with “no schooling background” Hamel Sy began his mission in 2000 to provide informal classes to a small group of newly arrived immigrants to Columbus, Ohio. In 2013, Mr. Sy founded the US African School of Leadership and Personal Development (USASL) as a non-profit organization in the hopes that he would raise enough funds to meet the demands of a growing immigrant population.
He's continued since that time with minimal financial support. The massive influx of African migrants entering the US through the southern border -- most of whom have no English language skills -- called for Mr. Sy to develop a unique curriculum, using students’ local dialects, such as Fulani and Wollof. To date, the school operates on a minimum of irregular individual donations from the community. Over 400 students have enrolled in classes, provided at five locations in Central and Southwestern Ohio.
The U.S. African School urgently needs funds to cover the cost of instruction materials, transportation for teachers and students traveling long distances, and rental costs to guarantee the availability of five currently operating classrooms.
Recurring donations, however small, would ensure the school's continued operation.
