If you’ve been following LBTR’s work, you may be familiar with the story of Lansing native Herman Cox, who watched as his home and bridge washed away in September. Weeks before Helene hit, Herman had to place his wife in assisted living. Then the storm came and took with it everything else he had, including his two dogs and two cats. He’s been living in a small camper on the spot where his house used to be ever since. The new floodplain has rendered the spot unsuitable for rebuilding. He made it through the winter, but he needs a real home.
Herman was able to purchase a mobile home with the money that FEMA allocated to him. It’ll have to go in a different spot than where his old house was. Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery is collaborating with engineers at UNC Charlotte to rebuild Herman’s bridge, and with Stonebridge Community Church to raise money for it. Once the bridge is done, we’ll need to set the mobile home on cinder block and install decking around it. We’ll also have to install a well and septic system.
The project is extensive, but so is all that Herman lost. We are asking the community to come together and help us fund the bridge rebuild and get Herman situated safely before winter.
The estimated cost to rebuild Herman’s bridge is $88,000. We’ll need additional funds for the well, septic, decking, and set up of the mobile home. Our fundraising goal is $125,000.
Stonebridge Community Church has already generously donated ten thousand dollars toward this project, and we are confident that with community support we can raise the rest for Herman.
