Help Suruq Achieve Her Dream of Becoming a Psychologist
"I am the mother of Suruq. She is my eldest daughter and she has graduated from the Lebanese University with a degree in psychology. To be able to work, she needs to complete her master's year, but our circumstances are very difficult. We managed to scrape together the $1,200 needed for her to study each year, but we could not save any money for the upcoming year. With the high cost of rent, electricity, and the low salaries here, we have struggled even to put food on the table. Saving was not an option, no matter how hard we tried.
I am trying to get a second job, but with the economy as it is and the spread of racism this year, it seems impossible. There is very little work for Syrians. We are a family of seven, and I want all my children to have the opportunity to make something better of their lives. I want them to learn and go to university.
My daughter loves her field because she is passionate about helping people. I desperately want her to complete her studies and achieve what we have worked so hard to start, especially now that we are so close. But the financial situation does not allow us to move forward. I feel heartbroken and as if I’ve let her down. She is so kind, but I know she is sad. I know she wishes our circumstances were different. Please, we need help. I cannot let her dreams and future end here.

"Soy la madre de Suruq. Ella es mi hija mayor y se ha graduado en psicología en la Universidad Libanesa. Para poder trabajar, necesita completar su año de maestría, pero nuestras circunstancias son muy difíciles. Hemos ido logrando juntar los $1,200 necesarios para estudiar cada año, pero no pudimos ahorrar dinero para el próximo año. Con el alto costo del alquiler, la electricidad y los bajos salarios aquí, hemos luchado incluso para poner comida en la mesa. Ahorrar no era una opción, por mucho que lo intentáramos.
Estoy intentando conseguir un segundo trabajo, pero con la economía como está y el aumento del racismo este año, parece imposible. Hay muy poco trabajo para los sirios. Somos una familia de siete personas y quiero que todos mis hijos tengan la oportunidad de hacer algo mejor en sus vidas. Quiero que aprendan y vayan a la universidad.
A mi hija le encantan sus estudios porque le apasiona ayudar a las personas. Deseo desesperadamente que complete sus estudios y logre aquello por lo que hemos trabajado tan duro, especialmente ahora que estamos tan cerca. Pero la situación financiera no nos permite avanzar. Me siento desconsolada y como si la hubiera decepcionado. Ella es muy amable, pero sé que está triste. Sé que desearía que nuestras circunstancias fueran diferentes. Por favor, necesitamos ayuda. No puedo permitir que sus sueños y su futuro terminen aquí.
