Help Jamila Find Safety
Last week, Jamila was preparing rice for lunch, the only thing she's been able to cook for her children in a while. With their $8 a day income, most of which goes to rent, their diet has been reduced to the bare minimum. They can't even pay the full $200 for their one-bedroom apartment, which has no electricity and walls that barely protect them from the cold and rain. They moved further out from the city because they couldn't afford to live closer to the center around a year ago. On top of that, they're still paying off old electricity bills from a previous tenant—one of Lebanon's many financial traps.
While Jamila was cooking on a portable stove in her dark kitchen, her phone ranged. Like so many others in Beirut, the call warned her of an imminent Israeli attack in her area. Grabbing her children, Musa and Yara, she fled to the street. Without money for a taxi, they walked for hours. After a few hours on the street Jamila went back home. Not because the threat had passed. She went back because she had nowhere else to go.
Jamila is from Raqqa. She has lived through war before. She fled Syria just before ISIS took over her city, escaping to Lebanon, where she believed she had a chance at safety. Now, Lebanon is at war, and she finds herself trapped again. This time, there is no escape. With no money and no home to return to Syria, her family faces a horrifying reality. Her husband's job in Beirut, although it pays too little to survive, is still more than he could ever earn in Syria. It's a tragic irony: their best chance for survival is staying in a war-torn Lebanon, where they risk bombings, because in Syria, they would face starvation.
Jamila urgently needs to relocate her family to a safer part of Beirut. Help her rent an apartment in a more secure area, and give her children a chance at safety. Every bit counts.
