Cramped in a small house, they waited for the storm to pass, but survival was never easy.
Abeer’s father made the impossible choice—he stayed behind in Beirut, risking his life so he could send whatever little he could earn to keep his family afloat. Months passed, filled with fear, longing, and nights of uncertainty. But finally, they returned. The war had calmed, and for a brief moment, they were whole again.
Yet, the struggle never truly ended.
A Girl Without a Classroom
Abeer was one of many Syrian children denied a place in public schools. Her parents, determined to give her a future, enrolled her in a semi-public school—the only option left. The first year, a kind sponsor covered her tuition, but as Lebanon’s economic crisis deepened, everything changed. The cost of education skyrocketed. A tuition that once cost $200 soared to nearly $1,500—an amount beyond reach for a family earning less than $200 per month. Food, rent, and basic survival leave nothing to save.
This year, Abeer was expelled from school. Not because she failed, but because she couldn’t pay. A dream shattered not by lack of ambition, but by a lack of means.

El padre de Abeer tomó la decisión imposible: quedarse en Beirut, arriesgando su vida para poder enviar lo poco que ganaba y mantener a su familia a flote. Pasaron los meses, llenos de miedo, tristeza e incertidumbre. Pero finalmente, regresaron. La guerra se había calmado y, por un breve instante, volvieron a estar completos.
Sin embargo, la lucha no había terminado del todo.
Una niña sin aula
Abeer fue una de las muchas niñas sirias a las que se les negó una plaza en la escuela pública. Sus padres, decididos a darle un futuro, la matricularon en una escuela semipública: la única opción que les quedaba. El primer año, una generosa patrocinadora cubrió su matrícula, pero a medida que la crisis económica del Líbano se fue agravando, los precios también empezaron a cambiar. El costo de la educación se ha disparado. Una matrícula que antes costaba $200, ahora cuesta casi $1,500, una cantidad inalcanzable para una familia que gana menos de $200 al mes. La comida, el alquiler y los recursos básicos no dejan nada para ahorrar.
Este año, Abeer fue expulsada de la escuela. No porque no pasara los exámenes, sino porque no podía pagar. Un sueño destrozado no por falta de ambición, sino por falta de recursos.
Aún podemos hacer realidad su sueño
