Hi, my name is Maricar Jagger, and I work for the Diocese of Portsmouth, one of the strategic partners for charities USPUK and CitizensUK. For the past 6 months, I’ve been matching local hosts in the UK with Ukrainian refugees.
Last month I was given the opportunity to see a couple of refugee centres in Warsaw, Poland. It was an eye-opener; while they’re safe and warm, more must be done.
Right now, those who are at the centre can have a camp bed, and they do what they can to make it comfortable and to secure their belongings. There are no lockers or cupboards. Just the floor next to your bed.
Bit by bit, charity staff at the centre have begun putting up temporary walls using basic materials. It’s still unlockable, but families can at least have a little privacy, a space to put down defences.
I know it’s a time when many charities ask for donations, but I’m not asking for much. If each of us contributes just £5, €5 or $5, together we can raise a lot and, more importantly, bring a little bit of love and hope to those in need.
