WHAT IS ZAKAT?
Zakat is a pillar of Islam that involves giving a specified amount of wealth to the poor and needy of the Muslim community once a year. It is not valid to give zakat to fund projects or mosques.
WHEN AM I REQUIRED TO GIVE ZAKAT?
Giving zakat becomes obligatory (fard) upon every legally responsible Muslim who possesses nisab (the minimum zakatable amount) for the duration of a lunar year. The zakatable amount is counted from one's monetary wealth and trade goods. Debts are subtracted from this amount.
HOW IS THE AMOUNT OF NISAB CALCULATED?
Masjid Vaughan's zakat calculator determines nisab (the minimum zakatable amount) based on today's value of 87.48 grams of gold. The value is automatically updated every day and incorporated into the calculation for your convenience. Try it here:
WHO DO I GIVE ZAKAT TO?
Zakat can only be given to the eight categories of recipients mentioned in the Quran (Chapter 9, Verse 60). You may give zakat to these qualified recipients directly, or you may give it to a trustworthy entity or person to distribute on your behalf.
IF I CHOOSE THIS PLATFORM TO GIVE MY ZAKAT, WILL I GET A TAX RECEIPT?
Yes. Masjid Vaughan is a community project of Risalah Foundation. As a Canadian charity, we will ensure that you receive a tax receipt before the next tax season, God willing.
