World Listening Day 2023
THE WORLD LISTENING PROJECT (WLP) is a 501c3 tax-exempt not-for-profit organization devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practices of listening and field recording. To learn more and be involved in the WLP’s activities please and subscribe to our discussion group.
WLP was founded in 2008 and maintains a website and online forum about its artistic and educational activities. These include the use of radio and web-based technologies, conducting public workshops, forums, lectures, as well as participating in exhibitions, symposia, and festivals, in addition to championing World Listening Day annually on 18 July, the birthdate of R. Murray Shafer.
Each year World Listening Day has a theme, historically created by a practitioner in the field. In 2023, the board decided to keep things open by instead offering three guiding questions to inspire activities or as reflection prompts.- What can we learn from the listening practices of all living beings?
- How can we deterritorialize listening practices?
- When should we listen more?
We invite you to share your reflection on these questions here.
Here are some 2023 World Listening Day events from around the globe. You may share your event information here.
Thank you for supporting our future efforts to make all of our communication platforms and events multi-lingual and accessible as we build a more inclusive global community.
