Did you know 1m2 of boreal peatlands in Canada holds FIVE TIMES the amount of 1m2 of tropical rainforest in the Amazon?
The peatlands in the Hudson Bay Lowlands are incredibly important. They store vast amounts of carbon, help regulate our climate, and provide critical habitat for countless species of plants and animals.
But the peatlands are threatened.
Ontario is planning to build hundreds of kilometres of roads to access mining, carving into this irreplaceable natural carbon sink.
The Premier is keen to drive the bulldozer himself!
We won't solve climate change by putting more than a billion tonnes of CO2 at risk to mine critical minerals. It makes zero sense as a climate solution, deepens our biodiversity crisis plus disrespects the people who live there, the Indigenous people of the Breathing Lands.
Ontario has plenty of options for critical minerals that are less controversial and more in line with an equitable, climate-safe, and nature positive future including: brownfield sites, recovering minerals from tailings, expanding existing sites, and recycling. These should all be exhausted first.
Without urgent action, these vital ecosystems are under threat.
That's why we are calling on you to join us in our mission to protect the peatlands. By signing up for a monthly gift today, your support will help to:
- Keep us in front of decision makers, holding them accountable;
- Uncover the truth of the ongoing exploration damage with new drone footage and images; and
- Speak with thousands as we raise awareness about the importance of peatlands and the threats they face in Ontario.
Protect the peatlands, and ensure a healthier, livable future for all. Make a donation with impact.

Founded in 1968, Wildlands League is a not-for-profit charity working to preserving nature for generations to come.
We recognize the alarming rates of species and habitat loss worldwide. In Canada, caribou ranges are on the brink, two- thirds of our grassland birds have gone extinct, and salmon stocks are in decline.
We are a team of policy experts, strategists, and communication professionals standing up for wildlife and standing with communities as we tackle irresponsible development and find ecological solutions that will protect at least 50% of Canada’s land, freshwater, and oceans - for our kids, for the climate, and for the planet.
