Goal
This January, with your financial support, the Independent California commissioned our second poll on California independence. Here are just a few of the remarkable things we learned:
61% of Californians polled say California would be better off if it peacefully seceded
77% say California should control its state borders “more like a country”
63% support using hardball tactics in the U.S. House to gain autonomy
Californians now feel more Californian than American overall
Our second poll was an even bigger success than the first. The results were covered in newspapers across the state by three syndicated California columnists (including Dan Walters). Three months later, journalists are still writing articles that cite our poll.
We need to run another poll ASAP. Our last poll ran less than a week before Donald Trump became president. We’re pretty sure the months of chaos that erupted since Trump took office have shifted Californians’ opinions on independence. But by how much? California elected officials ought to know.
It’s time to ask Californians directly if they’d vote for peaceful, negotiated secession, not just if they’d be better off. With an initiative in circulation that would start the process for California to leave the U.S. we think it’s important to have a realistic idea of its chances at the ballot box. Even if the current signature-collecting effort fails, a positive poll result would make it easier to raise money and organize volunteers for the next one.
We’ve got some new questions in the works. You might have noticed that this poll costs $1,000 more than the last one. That’s because we’re going to ask ten more questions! We’ll ask new questions about immigration enforcement, science funding, and how far Californians’ members of Congress should go to protect California.
(We’ve also got a little room for suggestions! Email your question ideas to director@ic.institute.)
Just like with the last poll we’re going to be partnering with YouGov, a reputable polling company.
To get meaningful results, we need to poll at least 500 Californians. It costs $14 to reach one randomly selected Californian and get them to spend several minutes answering questions.
If you could help us poll just one Californian, that would make a big difference. If you could help us reach 5 or even 10 Californians, that would be incredible!
And please, please, share this campaign with as many other people as you can. Now more than ever, most Californians you talk to are going to be open to independence.
Thank you for your support!
